Pre-Sugaring Prep 101: Ditch the Oils & Get Smooth Results

Why Skipping Lotions, Oils, Moisture & Makeup Before Sugaring Matters

At Sugar Me, we want every client to leave feeling smooth, confident, and cared for. One key way to ensure that? Showing up to your sugaring appointment with clean, dry skin—free of lotions, oils, moisture, and makeup.

It may seem like a small detail, but it makes a big difference in the quality of your results and the comfort of your treatment. Here’s why:

💧 Oils + Moisture = Barrier

Sugaring paste is water-soluble and designed to adhere to the hair, not the skin. But when there’s oil, lotion, or sweat on the surface, the paste can’t grip properly. This creates a barrier that makes hair removal less effective—and potentially more uncomfortable.

💄 Makeup Gets in the Way

For facial sugaring (like brows, lip, or chin), wearing makeup prevents the sugar from adhering properly. Even lightweight products can interfere. Plus, removing makeup beforehand can sometimes leave behind residue or irritation. It’s always best to come in fresh-faced for the cleanest, safest results.

✨ Clean Skin = Smooth Results

When the skin is dry, clean, and product-free, the sugar paste can wrap around each hair and remove it cleanly from the root. That means:

  • Better hair removal
  • Longer-lasting smoothness
  • Less irritation
  • Fewer missed spots

🚫 What to Avoid Before Your Appointment:

  • Lotions or body creams
  • Facial oils or serums
  • Moisturizing body washes or oil-based scrubs
  • Sweat from working out right before
  • Any makeup on areas to be sugared

Instead, give your skin a break the day of your appointment. Clean, dry, and free of product is the best prep!

Bonus Tip: After your appointment, that’s when hydration matters most. We carry gentle, skin-loving aftercare products like our Hydrate + Heal Balm, Daily Mantra and Peace Love & Soap's Body Oil to help soothe, soften, and keep ingrowns at bay.

Want to learn more about how to prep or what to expect from your appointment? Just ask—we’re always here to help you get the best sugaring experience possible.
